Neglected Blogs.

What good is a blog if you don't write on it.  So I write.

It has been months... so what is going on?

I'm making several trips a month to Haywood County North Carolina where I am the interum medical director for the ER at HRMC.  I'm hoping a good candidate for the med dir. job will be found in the next 6 months so I can cut back som on the days I'm away from home.  (Rumor has it I'm going to start working some at Riverside Shore Memorial by February)

The colder December weather is here and I'm tweaking the boat to go out on the bay for rockfish in search of 50+ lb fish.  Most of my free time will be spent in the woods in search of a couple more deer to put in the freezer.

Photography is all consuming.  I'm constantly in search of something new, something stimulating.  Some day I might figure out what it all means.

Going to Mountain Lake

Tomorrow is the final day of prep for a week long hunting trip in the woods surrounding Mountain Lake, Virginia (not Smith Mountain Lake)

While many people know the place for "Dirty Dancing", I know there will be good food, good times and good hunting.  Stay tuned for the hunting report.

Getting Ready to Hit the Road

I'm leaving tomorrow for a trip out to western Kentucky for a couple of days and then on to Haywood County North Carolina.  I'll be home Thursday.  Work must be done to support my habits!

Karen and I made a quick overnight trip to Cape May New Jersey. What a nice little beach town. What was most obvious was how they kept out all the fast food chains and motels. We will likely go back some day. I didn't take many images but I like this one.

Wandering Around Nashville at Night

Part of my work travels takes me through Nashville. I finally made it out at night in the city. I was out from around 10P to midnight. I hope to get back there later this month for some follow up images.... now that I've had time to look at these (and all the ones I'll never do more with)I have a lot of ideas. These are just warm ups.

Barkeater Workshop by Aaron Hobson in the Adirondacks

On August 12th Karen and I arrived in Saranac Lake, New York so I could attend a photography workshop by Aaron Hobson (The Cinemascapist.... a link to his work and a link to his blog to the right. The blog is "I Shot Myself, They Did To")

Here is the link to the Barkeater Workshop + Exhibit

http://www.barkeaterphotography.com/

The journey started about 6 months ago when I was about 2 months into my obsession with photography. I stumbled across his work and was drawn to it like a fly to fresh dog shit (that in a good way of course). A couple of months go by and then I find he is doing this workshop for 8 participants over 3 days culminating with a showing in a local art gallery. Whoa!

If nothing else I wanted to learn about the person behind the work. I could see he worked outside the box and I kept going back to look at his images.

I was a bit intimidated since the application process required sending him a sample of my work. This almost kept me from applying. I had told Karen about it and she pushed me along and told me to go for it. I did.

I won't go into any lengthy discussion of the 3 days. It turned out there were 5 of us. Aaron led the way with discussions of his work and other artists work. There were a couple of hours of time spent on post processing demos and even a trip to his fathers house where we could view some of Aaron's work in the flesh. Turns out Aaron's father (the Landscapist.... link to his blog to the right) also did the printing of our work to hang at our show at the 7444 Gallery. Of course there were trips to multiple sites for shooting pictures.

Aaron led the troops with 2nd in command, Todd Smith. Todd runs the gallery and was there every step of the way with coffee and bagels in the morning, technical support, discussions of anything and everything and of course the use of the 7444 Gallery as home base. They both put in a lot of work before we ever got there. There were adds in the paper and I think even some radio announcements of the show.

Working as 1st assistant to Aaron was J.C. A year ago J C tracked down Aaron and made arrangements to come all the way from France and spend a couple of months with Aaron as his mentor. J C speaks very limited English (well... don't we all). He was great fun and a big help and was also a very willing and cooperative model. It seems his favorite drink is rum and pineapple juice. (must be a French thing)

The first day Trixy was with us as a model and wound up in many images. The 2nd day Pat came along to the shoot in the abandoned pulp mill (built on the site of an iron ore mine/forge once owned by Benidict Arnold)

What a time! The link to my pics includes smattering of images with both outtakes and snapshots as well as more serious attempts at something artistic.

The show on Saturday night was a blast. There was wine and cheese and later rum and pizza and in between about 60 people came through. While neither of my two pieces sold there were two others that were snatched up by collectors.

More to follow........

Finally off for two weeks and I feel like crap...

But enough whining. It's summer. Good things are happening all around.

I've got a new computer. I had it custom built by my father. He also replaced the dead hardrive in my laptop.

I'm playing around in Photoshop CS4 using functions that stitch images together. Taking from 2 to 20 images and then combining them to create one larger image can be done to create panoramic views and other craziness.

I'm looking ahead to the middle of August when Karen and I are heading to the Adirondacks so I can attend a photography workshop. Aaron Hopson is an artist I've been intrigued with and I feel fortunate to be one of eight attending.

Bugs and Fishing

Taking pictures of bugs that is....

This week I've spent more time with bugs than ever. I probably shot about 1000 images to get these. What can I say... It was a lot of fun. There is a link to your right with the slideshow.

And for the fishing report:

6/11/09

David, Michael and I left my house at 630 AM. The plan was to run out of Kiptopeake and spend an hour or so catching some live bait and then set up for a slack flood tide at 930.

First stop was at the local Quicky Mart where Michael loaded up on Pringles, Honey Buns, Oreos and Ho Hos. Second stop was Chris’s Bait and Tackle. We got a flat of frozen bunker and an assortment of tackle and off we went.

There were only about 6 other trailers on the parking lot at Kiptopeake on this beautiful day. Is the economy that bad? We were soon on our way with a Southwest wind no more than 10 MPH. This made just enough chop as we headed toward the high rise to make me want to keep my tabs down and speeds down to around 22 mph.

We went on under the high rise and tucked in to 15 feet of water on the west side of Fisherman’s Island. We trolled small Clark Spoons on planers and inline sinkers and picked up a perfect size bluefish and a nice Spanish Mackerel. Michael tried a cast net over some schools of bunker by my net wouldn’t sink fast enough to get any. David got an itch to go set up.

I put us right on the mark where last year in early June we caught cobia. We could see two other boats and that was it. We were in 25 feet of water between the south end of Latimer Shoals and the green can. There was still some ebb current but not much. Before long we had out 4 lines. I was getting surface temperature readings of 75.

Slack tide came and went and the very slow flood current with the winds cooperating made it very easy to keep our lines just right. We did not chum today. About 930 we had a mystery pull that could have been a cobia but for some weird reason a brand new 80lb leader broke off at the swivel. We battled a few giant rays and a shark or two until around 1030.

At first the rod tip was showing a typical bounce of a shark. David was right there on the starboard corner and picked up the rod. He gave it line for about 30 seconds and it wasn’t moving fast at all. When he set the hook he had some head bobs that made us think shark. Then it did a smooth hard pull and we thought it was a ray. A few seconds later it came to the top and we saw one fin…. Just one. We saw it again. One fin. Not two of a ray but one. Cobia!

Michael and I cleared lines and watched. The fish never aired out and didn’t make any blistering runs but it was strong. David said it was a small one. I was convinced it was bigger than small.

We were fortunate it didn’t run around the boat. It did make one run as it got close to the boat for the first time that seemed like it was trying to cut the line on the motor. It went down a couple of times. Then we got a good look at it. David saw the corner of it’s mouth and the hook and got a little nervous. He didn’t like what he saw. Just about then it made a turn and a twist back on the leader that nobody likes to see a big fish make. It all held together.

David got it to the boat and I plunged the net once and the fish cooperated. Into the boat it came and grins all around with a few chants to the Cobia gods.

We tried till noon to do a repeat but nothing happened except for a ray that acted a little like a cobia and had us going for a few minutes.

We stopped back at Chris’s and weighed it. I had guessed 53, David 52 and Michael 51. The scale told us 56.3 and the tape was 53 inches. A fat specimen indeed!

Back at the yard we took these pics. I’m developing a superstition that I catch bigger fish when there is no camera on the boat.

Fishing Report... and some Birds....

It feels good to post a fishing report after a long winter. I’ve been working too much I think and I haven’t been out this spring except for a boat ride.

I didn’t make it out Sunday as I had hoped for, but today was perfect. I had spent the night in Norfolk last night so that I could deliver Karen to the airport at 510AM…. Ouch… not only was it outrageously early but it cut into turkey hunting. I got a couple more hours sleep after dropping her off (she went to NJ for a conference) and then on the way home stopped in at Chris’s Bait and Tackle for some chowders and hooks for drum and some 3 ½ inch 12 gauge 2 ounce #5’s for the turkey I hope to shoot in the next couple of days.

I’m not sure what time I left Willis Wharf other than “close” to 3. Low tide was listed as 440 at the Machipongo Inlet. I had a pleasant ride out to the fishing spot.

There were one or two boats there when I arrived and I dropped anchor and had the stern in 15 feet of water. I started rigging some rods that had last seen striper action in December. One by one I got 3 lines out.

I had picked up several sharks during the next hour and broke off a couple of leaders that shouldn’t have broken. Turns out I was using some dry rotted 80lb leader material that had probably died a slow death in the sun. I retied all my hooks with some fresher material. I’m glad I did.

About the time the water was starting to flood around 540 I had a run and set the hook. At first I thought it was a big shark the way it was running and shaking its head. But…it wanted to stay down. That rod was on the light side and I had 30 lb mono and a questionable leader so I didn’t want to muscle it. I finally saw brown!

I got it in the net on the first scoop and boated my first Black Drum of the year. It measured 38 inches. It had swallowed the hook so it was my fish for the day. If I had lip hooked it I might have thrown it back and fished for a bigger one but all in all I was very happy. I had plenty of time to stop and take some pictures and get back home to hose the boat down in daylight.

From the looks of things this is just the beginning. There should be some big ones on the way.

I know... I'm not posting enough....

I've been away from home since April 11th and won't be home till the 26th. I hope to bring everything up to date then.

I'll get some more pictures of added to the Nashville, Asheville and points in between.....

It's been 13 days since my last entry....

I've been working a lot and not taking pictures. I've been through Nashville again when it was rainy and dreary and didn't touch the camera.

Today was a sunny day and I got out to make some images while Karen was working in the garden.

The pictures are in the slideshow titled, "March 18th in the yard".

Thursday Afternoon at Willis Wharf

I made it to Willis Wharf for the sun setting behind me during the "magic hour". Nothing fantastic but some pleasing results. While I was busy taking pictures of the little birds I totally missed an eagle that came very close.. didn't have a shot.... The other pictures I took today are tucked away in the Willis Wharf folder.

An Afternoon in March

Well winter is screaming by. We had our first snow but I was away for the best part of it. I recently made a trip to Murray Kentucky to work a long weekend. I flew in and out of Nashville and despite some reasonable weather I didn't take one picture on the trip.

This afternoon I was motivated to get outside and dig around for some images. I collected what I could and put them in the set, "An Afternoon in March".

Spring is around the corner.....

Another Slide Show...

I'm guessing I'm not even halfway through looking at the Hawaii pictures closely. I started working on one day and found a lot of things that are worth processing. In addition, I don't have a set style of post processing so as that evolves I go back and re process some of my favorites. I'm having fun and since I have a result to post it isn't quite as bad as "just wasting time".

Rainy Day...

I got very little done today on this rainy day off from work. I'm back at DePaul in the AM.

I've been exploring a different form of processing pictures. In general it is referred to as HDR (high dynamic range). Much of what is out there as HDR is very new age, space age, odd looking art. There is a very wide range of what can be done with it. In general it is a process that brings a lot of what would have been in dark and exposes and that which is in bright light down into range. It has it's uses.

The new link to the right is for my HDR stuff.

If you want to see some professional HDR check out this stuff:

On the Eastern Shore...

In February the winter is relatively mild. However, the colors are flat even with sunshine. It's a black and white time of year. I went out for a drive this afternoon. I was looking for something interesting. I can't say I was successful. I did however take a few shots at the old run down building in Oyster.

I'll be working dayshifts Saturday and Sunday.

Maybe I'll find somemthing exciting Monday?

Back to the real world...

Of working for a living... I need to get my ass in gear and get a haircut and then get ready to work tonight. Two night shifts... off two days... two day shifts... off 3 days.... and on and on.... I'm not complaining... well maybe a little.

I need to lay off looking and post processing Hawaii pictures. Maybe in a couple of weeks I can go back over them with a new eye and do some more.

Till next time....

Recovery Part 2

I have two internal clocks right now competing for sleep time and so far it's a draw. Good news is I don't have to work till Tuesday night at 7. Two night shifts at DePaul will help get rid of the Hawaii time schedule and get me back to normal.

I'm wading through pictures and in the process going back through some already done and redoing them with different post processing techniques. Comments are welcomed.

Recovering

We had a bit of a nap that lasted 3 hours. We'll try to make it to bed for a regular nights sleep tonight and see if we can get back on east coast time.

I've started the long process of going through images. I made 3500 images on this trip. I'll probably have 10 or so printed. I won't add any more pics to the other slideshows but instead will start new ones like the "Odds and Ends". I'll try and start adding stories and explanations also.

Richard

Home

Our trek lasted about 20 hours. We feel a bit like this person on the boat yesterday. She was seasick almost the entire 4 hours we were on the boat. We aren't sick...just whooped!

Packing it Up

Well, the fun and games are over. It has been a great trip and we've had discussions of what it would be like to move to Hawaii. I don't think it's going to happen in this lifetime though.

We leave Kauai in 4 hours. We fly to Honolulu with at least a 3 hour layover to eat, shop one last time and work on pictures. Then it's on to Atlanta. From there we fly to Norfolk.... try and remember where the car is parked... and the one hour drive home.

Karen is arranging our trip to Japan for next year......

Richard

Friday Morning

Actually I'm writing this Thursday night but no one on the east coast will be reading this till Friday AM.

We took our boat ride up the Na Pali coast... what a great time. The whales were all over the place and we saw some spinner dolphins and a giant ray and of course the part of Kauai that can only be seen by boat or helicoptor.

I shot about 480 pics today... I went through and found a whale of a shot... a baby humpback...

I'm tired and need some sleep. Tomorrow we leave Kauai about 1230 PM and get home 1130 AM on Saturday... a very long trip.

Richard

We Leave Tomorrow

But today we have sunshine and a scheduled sailing trip up the Na Pali coast. Hopefully we will be close enough to whales to get some good shots.

There are no roads that go completely around the island and the area we will see is only accessable by boat or helicopter.

Things are winding down. The front page pic is a tourist attraction called Spouting Horn. The water column is probably about 30 feet high.

Richard

Wednesday

Let's see... it's about 130P on the east coast so that makes it 830A here... I'm just getting up. We haven't seen a sunrise since we left home.

We are down to two full days left in Hawaii and then the dreaded trek home. This place makes you think about changing life's course and relocating! However, the cost of living is outrageous and wages are not any higher than the Eastern Shore.... and overall the Internet is slow no matter where you hook up... but a rainy day is beautiful!

While taking pictures I've tried at times to find scenes and capture them in ways the average person doesn't see them. Black and white is one way to approach it as well as capturing the old and discarded and even combining the two.

Keep in mind that the pics on the blog page get cropped to fit sometimes so click on the links to the right to see them properly. Also, when in the flickr slideshow move the cursor to the right lower corner and there is an icon to click on that will give you full page pics.

Hope all is well.

Still Tuesday Morning.....

Lazy morning.... rainy with shards of sunshine. Karen and I are working on our pictures and doing some laundry.

We were going to go for a boat ride this afternoon but have rescheduled for Thursday.

The pic on this post is an aircraft engine attached to the side of a house. I'm guessing an artist/welder owns the place. You will be able to tell the other pics from this house.

More to follow.....

Richard

Tuesday Morning

It's about 1 AM here and I'm crosseyed. We had a busy day. We stumbled across a little town called Hanapepe and I decided to do the town in black and white. Eventually I'll have a separate set but for now they are all in with Kauai.

We are taking a sailing trip around the north end of the island tomorrow to see areas one can't see by road and to whale watch.

I'll keep you posted!

Monday Morning

Actually I'm posting this late Sunday night..... I'm beat! Nothing much to say right now other than I've added more pics to the Kauai section. We've seen whales but I haven't got any shots good enough to post. I'll work on that.

Have a great day.

Sunday

We are getting ready to go exploring in a few minutes. Yesterday we traveled around the west side of the island and went as far north as the roads would take us. There were some beaches on the north end we couldn't get to as the dirt and sand roads were closed due to wet weather.

Kauai is a small island and one of the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands. Therefore it is broken down by wind and weather and vegetation. While the big Island had vast expanses of lava rock, Kauai is covered in green. The pics of the canyon were taken at Waimea Canyon and we were up around 3500 feet looking down.

I've added the new section titled "Kauai".

Much Aloha

Saturday Morning in Kauai

While Karen is catching up on sleep, I'm catching up on sorting and editing and post processing pics and getting them uploaded.

We spent a couple of days and nights with Jason and Kollette.... and Izzie and Lucia and the new baby who doesn't quite yet have an official name but it is looking like he will be named "Asa".

The coffee and mac nut farm looks great. We were there 3 years ago when things were just getting started. A lot of work has been done. (for a link to all your Kona coffee and Mac nut needs... check in the column to the right)

Keep an eye out for a Discovery Channel special on midwives. I think it is scheduled to air this summer. Jason and Kollette were one of four couples featured and film crews and writers spent days with them filming and collecting their story. Funny thing happened though.... Kollette went into labor and progressed so fast the midwive didnt' have time to get there. Jason delivered the baby!

It will take hours and hours to get descriptions on pics for those who want to know. If you have any specific burning questions feel free to ask.

Have a great day.

Richard

We Made it to Kauai

We are exhausted so I'll make this very short. There are more pics posted. I've got a reliable and fast connection now so I'll get more done and start adding some test and descriptions to the pics. Hope all is well. I hear a lot of you are getting some cold icy weather.

Captain Cook, Hawaii

The picture was from yesterday morning taken from our balcony at Uncle Billy's in Hilo. The cruise ship was the Pride of America and was quite a sight to see it come and go in the small harbor.

Well here it is Thursday morning. We are off the grid with Jason and Kollette Stith on their coffee and Mac nut farm. All I can say is..... beee u tee ful! It still might be a couple of days before I get any serious picture posting done. They don't have much electricity much less high speed internet. What they do have is fruit of all kind falling off trees and a view of the Pacific from 1500 feet up and 5 miles away. When it is clear you can see the horizon that is probably another 10 miles.

Sometime Saturday we will be flying to Kauai and at that time I should have time and internet to catch up with pictures. I'm shooting about 250 to 300 a day and Karen has her camera. She is posting on Facebook. You can join facebook and look her up and request to be her friend... then you can see her pics. It is free and doesn't take that long. It will probably be Saturday by the time she gets on Facebook again.

Well, let me send this off for posting. Until next time... which might be Saturay night....

Tuesday Night in Hilo

Internet connections in Hawaii seem slow and not efficient. At least that is what I'm experiencing. I'm trying to get bunches of pics uploaded to Flickr and it is near impossible.

We had a nice day today just riding around and going to state parks. Each one gave us a different look at the ocean and plant life. We found one place that looked a bit dangerous for surfing, but there were two guys who seemed to know what they were doing. Had they gone off course they may have been thrashed and smashed into the rocks. Actually, the rocks aren't really rocks.... or maybe they are.. regardless, the lava stones... either way it would scrape skin and break bones.

We had dinner at Uncle Billies which is where we are staying. Turns out Billie is a local guy with Hawaiian roots and is locally famous. Tonight there were about 30 local folk, politicians and others who were having a meal and celebration of something. They all seemed to have a good time and sang some songs in Hawaiian we of course didn't understand. The food was much better than we expected from a motel restaurant and was probably as good as you could find for twice the price. Good thing we are doing a lot of walking.

Well, maybe tomorrow I can get pictures uploaded into outer space so they can filter on down through the wind and wires to your computer.

Mahalo,

Richard

Tuesday Morning in Hilo, Hawaii

We had a rough start this morning and couldn't get internet a the place we are staying in Hilo. That and the couple next door who were having an hour long knock down dragged out fight for over an hour.... sheesh....

So let's see.... we flew into the airport at Kona Sunday night. We spent the night and Monday morning made some plans. We decided to spend Monday and Tuesday night in Hilo (hmmm... could have flown into their airport..) Sometime Wednesday afternoon we will head back over the the west coast and spend Wed, Thur and Friday at Jason and Kollette's coffe and Mac nut farm... maybe do a little work!

After we get our internet needs met we will go out exploring for the day. Every site we see is new and exciting.

I'm going to start putting pics in catagories. I'll break them down into the Islands.... I've added a few to Oahu so after you look at them this time you won't be finding any new pics. Next catagory will be "The Big Island". I might later break that one down.

Hope all is well in your worlds.

Richard

(well... it looks like I can't upload a batch of pics I want to right now.... I'll try again tonight...hmmm around midnight your time on the East coast.)

Monday Morning in Kona

Here it is and it is already 1030. We are getting breakfast and trying to plan our day. I can't upload any new pictures right now as they are on the external hard drive and I can't plug that in here.

Hope all is well with everyone. I should be able to get back online by tonight.

Leaving Waikiki

We've got about 45 minutes till we hop on the shuttle to go to the airport and get on a plane to fly to The Big Island.

We are calling our Waikiki, Oahu experience our "Urban" experience. We did a lot of walking and did not rent a car.

This is the slow time of year but the beaches and streets seemed packed. I'm looking forward to the Big Island and finding quiet spots to enjoy the natural beauty of Hawaii although there is plenty to be had on the beaches.

This morning we took a van ride to the stadium for the local swap meet/flea market. This is an experience that Karen will not miss regardless of where we go. She loves to shop for those special treasures that are found in "antique" stores, junk shops and flea markets. Today she found some kokeshi dolls from the 70's. She loves all things oriental so she was pleased. I was along for the walk and didn't see much that interested me.

Our last meal here was at the Rainbow Drivethrough about a 1/2 mile from the zoo. I had curried beef and Karen had some type of chili hot dog platter with rice. It fit right in with the urban experience as this was pure local and enough food to stuff a sumo wrestler for under 7 dollars.

It is possible I've lost my cell phone. I thought I left it in the room when we checked out but no one has turned it in. It's possible it is stuffed in the luggage somewhere. Don't try to call until you've heard it is found.

So off we go to the Big Island. We will spend the first night around Kona not far from the airport. Assuming we have internet there I'll get some more pictures posted tonight.

Time for Bed...

Waikiki Saturday Morning.

Although this picture is not very good from a technical standpoint... I like it. I think it captures the spirit of this place. It was taken from the 20th floor of the Marriott here in Waikiki and the subject was easily 1/4 mile away.

Today we are making a trip to the zoo and in general wandering around.

There are not many places I'd consider moving to.. or running away to.... Hawaii is at the top of the list.

Much more to follow....

Submarines

This morning when I stopped off at the 1st Island of the CBBT I had the opportunity to watch 3 different Coast Guard vessels and a Navy Sub. It was a bit chilly with winds gusting to over 30 and temps right around 29. I've added pics to the slideshow "CBBT" and the link is in the right hand column.

A Cloudy Monday

I'm getting ready to trek across the bay to work tonight. I think I've finally recovered from the last all nighter. I'll sleep some Tuesday morning. I'll sleep some more Tuesday night. Then on Wednesday I have to get ready for our trip on Friday as I'll be working on Thursday.

Over 30 years ago when I had a 35mm SLR my preparation would have been so simple. How many rolls of film could I afford...2... maybe 3 or 4 rolls of 36 exposure slide film. Developing costs would come later. Grab the camera and go.

Today I'm ready with a daily limit of 16 gigs of SDHC cards ready to be downloaded to an external hard drive of 250 gigs and uploaded after processing to Flickr. Shooting in RAW (no.. not naked... it's a format in the camera) takes up a lot of memory but 16 gigs should give me a limit of 1000 images a day. I can do 200 a day when there isn't anything to take pictures of!

So as we age our ability to remember declines along with the price of electronic memory.... I figure by the time I can't remember I should have everything properly backed up.

Hunting Pictures

To clarify the post.. I was out hunting for pictures with my camera.

It has been a cloudy day and although not ideal for a lot color in pictures there are plenty of opportunities. I drove over to Willis Wharf and walked around in the humid cold air and found a couple of Hooded Mergansers. There were a few snow flurries and it was windy. Typical hunting weather for the Eastern Shore.

Sunday Morning

We have this flowering plant in the house. It might be an orchid. For over a week it has changed and is in full bloom with about 20 of these flowers. When I'm around and the sun is shining through the window just right I get another shot.

I'm trying to get my skills up for Hawaii. I've estimated I'll probably take about 500 shots a day and about 5 to 7 thousand images for the trip. I'm hoping out of all that I should have a couple good ones.

The Pelican Has Landed

pelican2

It's Friday afternoon and I've only had a couple of hours sleep since working last night. It was a crudy night as far as they go... not that any of them are "good".

The UPS man delivered a package that included my new lens. I've taken a few shots with it and all I can say is I hope I can live up to its potential. It is a Canon EF 100-400 IS USM.

On the way home this morning I stopped at the first island of the CBBT and got a series of shots of this pelican coming in for a landing. For the complete landing sequence you can see them in the slideshow by clicking on the link to the right for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge....

Morning Moon

On the way home this morning around 8 AM I stopped at the CBBT and was busy trying to get some good bird shots when I turned around and found a jet flying by under the morning moon.

BIF

A couple of posts ago I put up a picture of a "Hawk". Well, I'm learning. I believe it is an immature Bald Eagle. Today I spent some time watching this guy and taking a few pictures. After getting better looks and consulting a book I've concluded it is an eagle. I've got to rush now to make it to work by 4PM since I've been greatly distracted.

12 Days Till Hawaii

On the 23rd Karen and I are headed out to Hawaii. As usual, I haven't prepared one bit. All I know is that the first week we will be on the Big Island and the 2nd week Kauai. Is there really anything else I need to know?

The picture today is a cement statue who lives outside by our back deck. Today I named her Sunge Qui when I posted the pic on flicker. I have no idea what that might mean.

---This just in: Karen tells me her real name is Kwan Yin and she is the goddess of mercy and compassion.

BIF... Birds in Flight

This morning while trying to get my caffeine level up to normal I noticed some bird action from the kitchen. My first thought was, "just another buzzard". However, I soon noticed some un-buzzard like behavior.

I didn't have my camera in my hands as it was in the other room and besides, it didn't have my long lens on it. So I watched this hawk as it made three swoops down toward the ground targeting an area out of sight behind my boat. It then retreated and perched on a tree 125 yards from my view point. I went and got the camera and switched lenses to my 55-250 zoom. I waited.

It did not resume its mission as I had hoped but left its perch and went in search of food elsewhere. I got this one passable shot.

Later when I got dressed I went out in the yard to see what might have attracted it. In the general area was a "buck tail". A furry 6 inch piece of a deer tail from one of the deer I shot this year was laying in the grass. Emmitt probably carried it there and just left it.

I believe the hawk had spied it from above and decided to take the presumed prey but when it didn't run or move as it swooped down it didn't have the proper data to complete its mission. Interesting.

The picture is marginal. I need a better lens for BIF and other wildlife. I see a Canon EF 100-400 in my future.
